It is still possible to make a profit with CPU mining !  Not a big profit, but profit is profit.  There are a few smaller coins that are ASIC and GPU resistant, such as VRM.  You check that coin out (with a link to the mining software) on Poolinat0r.

Another alternative would be to mine the very popular Monero.  It uses the CryptoNote algorithm and there are two interesting miners that you can use.  There is the Wolf’s XMR miner, and the Claymore CryptoNote Miner.  And don’t forget the new XMR-Stak miner, which is free 🙂

If you want to mine ZCash with your CPU, check out Nicehash EQM ZCash miner, or nheqminer.  We suggest to experiment and compare profitability.  If you want to use your computer at the same time, you can specify in the settings (usually information is in the readme file) to only use a specific number of cores.  Always check your temperatures for safe operation.  A great tool to use for this is HWMonitor.  Free from CPUID.

    An i7-2700k @ 4.5ghz gets about 24 sol/s for ZCash.
